Horror short to screen this month at Hollywood’s Vista Theatre and at Stan Lee’s Comikaze.
CHICAGO— Continuing to pile up awards and attract rave reviews on the film festival circuit, OTHER, the short film from director Daniel DelPurgatorio and Chicago production studio Vitamin, was named Best Short at Elvira’s Horror Hunt, a horror film festival and competition held this past weekend in Indianapolis. OTHER also took home Best Director-Short, Best Screenplay and Best Score.
Along with winning top honors, OTHER will be featured at a special red-carpet screening at the historic Vista Theatre in Hollywood on September 13th presented by horror icons Elvira and Peaches Christ. To round out the weekend, OTHER will also be included in Stan Lee’s Comikaze, a comic, gaming, sci-fi, fantasy, horror and pop-culture convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center on September 14-16th.
Elvira’s Horror Hunt is presented in conjunction with HorrorHound Magazine’s HorrorHound Weekend, one of the country’s largest conventions for horror and Sci-Fi fans. 7 feature-length films and 13 shorts were selected for screening at the festival and were judged by a celebrity jury that included Sybil Danning (Reform School Girls, Grindhouse), Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, The Devil’s Rejects), film writer and personality Joe Bob Briggs, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) and co-“hostess” Joshua Grannell (Peaches Christ).
Inspired by films of the ‘70s and ‘80s, OTHER centers on a brilliant doctor’s obsessive quest to cure himself of a terminal illness. While conducting a series of unconventional experiments, he discovers a scientific loophole that could possibly save his life…if he is willing to accept the sinister consequences.
Since making its debut at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, OTHER has been selected for screening at more than 30 international film festivals, including Fantasia International Film Festival, Telluride Horror Show, ScreamFest, HollyShorts International Film Festival and DC Shorts. It was named Best Short Film at the 2012 Motor City Nightmares Film Festival, and won awards for Best Special Effects at the Los Angeles New Wave International Film Festival and at the Blue Whiskey Independent Film Festival.
Anything Horror calls OTHER “a tight, fast-paced story that grabs you from the first frame and keeps you glued to the screen.” Film Bizarro calls it “both a tribute and a modern piece of great horror, and it hits you right in the organs.”
OTHER is the first narrative film for Vitamin, a creative boutique best known for its work on television ads for Nike, McDonald’s and FX Network. The story was conceived by DelPurgatorio and Vitamin art director Rob Foster, and then adapted in collaboration with screenwriter Anthony Williams. The rest of the studio’s creative and production staff assisted with everything else, including conceptual design, live action production, 3D animation, visual effects, editing, color correct, and audio.
