Rob DiFondi mixes a unique projection mapping experience supporting the April launch of “God of War.”

NEW YORK—Sound Lounge delivered the final mix for a first-of-its kind projection mapping experience that transformed the Golden State Warriors’ basketball court into a battlefield as part of campaign for the PlayStation game God of War, which debuts later this month.

Conceived by New York agency BBH, the piece dubbed War on the Floor depicts an epic struggle between father and son heroes and a series of monstrous foes. It was projected in 3D onto the basketball court during the halftime show during the Warriors v. Spurs game. In addition to being witnessed by the more than 18,000 fans at Oakland’s Oracle Arena, the spectacle was live-streamed on Facebook and featured on ABC’s national broadcast.

Sound Lounge’s Rob DiFondi mixed the cinematic piece, which includes intricate sound design from Yellowcab Studios and an original score by Emmy Award-winning composer Bear McCreary. Sound elements were derived directly from the game, which is set in a snowy, Nordic land and features battles fought with an assortment of medieval weaponry.

Knowing that the piece was going to play in a basketball arena allowed DiFondi room to get creative with the mix. “We mixed it loud with a lots of heavy sound effects,” he recalls. “It was like mixing a movie. We could make it as dense and dynamic as we liked. There were no limitations.”

DiFondi mixed alternate versions of the piece for web, mobile and game platforms. He also mixed a traditional ad campaign, titled Greatness Awaits, supporting the game’s launch. It included 60-, 30- and 15-second television spots that are now airing globally.
